Z-Proto to be unveiled at 8:30 P.M EST. Where does it need to be in terms of price and capability? The void left amongst uber-pony cars, light-weights, and the Toyota Z4 is surprisingly vast, but it would take some adeptness to navigate in concert with cost considerations. I’d say Nissan needs to do put out something nimbler and (I daresay) no beefier than the 370Z, with considerably more precision and power, all without quite eclipsing GTPP/Camaro SS money. If the price goes up substantially, it needs likewise to feel nice enough appeal to an older crowd and capitalize on the nostalgia factor. But, hey- as long as it gets released before the IDx.

That, plus nothing too stupid with the inevitable display (integrated into the dash would be nice) and majority real controls, and I’m interested.

As for the car, hopefully there's a new platform under there. It probably has the motor from the Q50 & Q60 Red Sport 400. We know there will be a manual but if there's an auto hopefully it's better than the same old 7 speed torque converter one that dates back to the beginning of the 370Z & G37 and is still present in those RS400 models.

Definitely. I was a little cranky, for one, to see the Miata power bump come with a mandatory TV doohickey, mirror heathens be damned.

I’m imagining a 300ZR to go to bat with its German-I6 rival. Realistically, though, t hese new VR engines should carry over and might even pack something extra previously left on the table. So far they have only been paired to that 7AT, though. Retaining a manual was a smart move, at least. Maybe we c ould finally see production with some GTR parts thrown in the mix as with some past concepts?

I’m in a different market to you and I’ve got no idea what it should be. Whether it’s a BRZ fighter or a Supra fighter or something in between, it will be historically accurate. And almost always someone will say it should have more or less displacement/turbos/hybrid.
If it’s a good car I don’t really mind where it falls. But I expect Nissan will mess it up.

I’m waiting now, thanks for the reminder. I will not buy one, I will keep my 71', but the world should have a good Z, I liked how the last one looked, I hate the 350. My favs are still my S30 and the 300ZX.

Looks pretty, I don’t love the rear light panel but the rest is pretty cool. I love that they don’t have huge robot door handles like the last two gens.

I think it’s pretty graceful for being a distinctive design, the most clear thing from the teasers may have been that Z32-esque rear treatment and it’s definitely interesting to have integrated with the S30 cues. I’m actually looking forward to seeing these on the road, although it’s launching at quite a precarious time . This is the first overt 90s retro design I can think of.

If this is the production car I’d say Nissan has actually done something they haven’t done since the Juke.

They certainly gave it some more character. I’d say it is visually interesting and hits the fundamentally hits right notes. It feels new despite almost-certain FM roots (windshield/roofline areas)

It needs Rota 8 spoke wheels and that rear light panel from the Z32 just doesn’t work for me otherwise I like it.

Jesus H, that thing’s so sad-looking.
Not like I’m shocked, but... damn. It’s like disappointment on 4 wheels.

I think I’m so used to the plate splitting the rear end that it looks strange to put it below. Yeah some other wheels would help, I want to see it in other colors, NISMO should be interesting. I have hated the robo door handles in the past two gens and I am glad they didn’t add fake vents in the front of it.

I’m very glad they steered clear of the 350/370 styles. Those just didn’t work for me either.

I’ve pointed the cars out to my wife and even she says the door handles were out of place and bothered her. The 370 was better than the 350 but it was just not doing it for me.

Such a missed opportunity.

The 300ZX was my “it will be mine...” car in high school.

It’s just so wrong. Fundamentally
wrong. Maybe it’s a cynical yes for die-hard try-hards, I dunno.

My friend with the shop has one and an S30, I do like a pretty 300ZX.
